What the heck is love? This may be one of the most speculated questions in the weird world of humanity. Love is blind. Love is bliss. “You know it when you feel it”. What is it?
Now, one of the first things you should know about me is that I’m a dreamer–almost to the point where my sights are set unrealistically high. With that in mind, it should be no surprise to know that I am a big time romantic as well. I’m a sucker for sappy love stories, weddings, and Nicholas Sparks movies…Call me pathetic 🙂
But although I think summer flings and romantic swept-off-your-feet shindigs are utterly cute, I know Hollywood does love an injustice.
Love can hurt. Love can be hard. Love can be tiring. It doesn’t have to be, and I think that’s what Hollywood highlights, but that doesn’t mean that love will never be something you have to work for.
When you love someone, you give them the ability to break you. You open yourself up and lay yourself out, exposing all your vulnerable little ticks and flaws just so you can make more room for selfless care of another person. And frankly, that’s really scary. You’ve made yourself open to any attacks at your heart, but you take it. Why? Because that person is worth it.
Being someone who has a very low tolerance for pain–physical or emotional, I find this terrifying. Love is for the brave, for those strong of heart and strong of soul. It is for this reason that I believe being able to love fully and completely is an act that is worthy of the utmost respect.
I’ve learned that being able to love fully is an act of humility and total selflessness, an almost total denial of self in care for another. Man, isn’t that beautiful? We tend to think of movies romanticizing everything, but in my opinion, the silver screen hasn’t fully grasped what real love is.
Some may say that this love isn’t real. I’m saying, HELL YEAH IT’S REAL. A mother who would give her life for her child wields a shield of love. The countless number of men and women who risk their lives for their country, for people they don’t even know. Their bulletproof vests are pillows in comparison to their determined hearts. These people are strong. I can only hope to grow to be as loving.
I know for sure that I am not the perfect lover, in my definition of love. But here are some things that I do love:
- my family
- God
- music
I hope you had an amazing Easter!
In honor of the Lord who is the epitome of love,
Trish
